The 17th California International Wushu Championships Concludes Successfully in 2025 — Wushu Elites from Multiple Countries Gather in Silicon Valley, Youth All-Around Grand Champion Finalists Announced

[Santa Clara, California, USA – June 2025]

The 17th California International Wushu Championships successfully concluded after two days of exciting competition. The on-site events were held from May 23 to 24 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, while the online video competition wrapped up on May 30. This year’s tournament reached a record-breaking scale, drawing nearly 95 teams and around 2,000 athletes from 15 countries and regions worldwide. Including judges, coaches, accompanying parents, and spectators, total on-site attendance reached approximately 4,500 participants.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Tournament Chairman Shudong Li and his student Michelle Ahl.

This grand event was hosted by the World Tai Chi Science Federation, officially sanctioned by the USA Wushu-Kungfu Federation (USAWKF), and co-organized by Chinese Wushu Magazine. The championships were generously sponsored by KungFuDirect (USA), Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Fantuan Delivery, and other supporting organizations.

Renowned vocalist Frank Ouyang has been invited to perform the national anthem at the opening ceremony.

Government Leaders Show Support, Dignitaries Gather for the Opening Ceremony

This year’s tournament received strong support from Chinese diplomatic missions abroad and various levels of government in California.
Cultural Consul Wang Wenhui from the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco and Director Ye Desheng from the Fujian Provincial Sports Bureau led delegations to attend and deliver remarks at the opening ceremony.

Distinguished guests included California State Treasurer and Lieutenant Governor candidate Fiona Ma, State Senator Aisha Wahab, Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee, Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor, Union City Mayor Gary Singh, City Councilmember Yang Shao, Cupertino Mayor Liangfang Zhao, former California Assemblymember Kansen Chu, and his wife, Mrs. Daisy Zhou. Many of them attended in person or sent representatives to offer congratulations and support.

At the grand opening ceremony, attending guests also presented trophies to the recipients of the “Premier Institution for Wushu Education” and “Excellence in Teaching and Promotion” awards, in a solemn and celebratory atmosphere.

These outstanding martial arts athletes will compete in the All-Around Grand Championship Finals and the International Youth Wushu Elite Scholarship Selection at the 2026 The 1st World Wushu Open Championships, where they will share a total of $15,000 to $30,000 in Wushu scholarships sponsored by the World Tai Chi Science Federation and supporting partners.

Virtual Competition Equally Spectacular

The online competition was just as exciting, attracting 31 teams and nearly 500 athletes from Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Events included individual, paired, and group categories across a wide range of disciplines such as modern Wushu, traditional Wushu, Tai Chi, and Health Qigong.

Memorable Moments from the Online Competition for 

Among the many highlights, a 100-member delegation led by Coach Liang Chun from Hong Kong’s Chinese International School—including its elite Wushu team, general Wushu team, and the Hong Kong International Wushu Culture Center—stood out as the largest participating group. They delivered outstanding performances across modern hand forms, weapons, Southern styles, and Tai Chi categories.

In the youth traditional division, the U.S. International Wushu Center led by Coach Qiu Hua Wu and Rong’s Kungfu Academy led by Coach Jun Rong each excelled in various traditional Wushu events, earning well-deserved recognition.

Fierce Competition in the Adult Division of the Online Tournament

In the adult division of the online competition, the Zhengzhou University Wushu Team, led by Li Na, Party Secretary of the School of Physical Education (Main Campus), participated with distinction. Associate Dean Si Hongyu served as one of the competition arbitrators, and Associate Professor Wang Nan served as the head coach. The team fielded 10 outstanding athletes across 20 events and achieved remarkable results, winning 16 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.

Henan Polytechnic University, Shandong Sport University, and the Golden Dragon Wushu Team from Iran also demonstrated exceptional skill and delivered impressive performances, making for an intensely competitive field.

The online video competition, with its accessible format, has created a global platform for martial arts enthusiasts to engage with the international Wushu community. Innovative and creative performances from across the world converged here, showcasing diverse styles and fostering mutual learning. Given the worldwide distribution of participants, all online competitors can download their electronic participation certificates through their personal registration accounts. A Major Leap Forward — Stepping onto the Global Stage

The 2026 event will mark a historic upgrade with its official new title: the Inaugural World Wushu Open Championships, scheduled to take place in September 2026 in Silicon Valley, California, USA. The tournament is expected to attract over 3,000 athletes from around the world, with total participation projected to exceed 6,000.

As an internationally branded event, it will serve as a powerful platform to propel Wushu further onto the global stage.
