In Stanford University’s course “The Science and History of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” Tai Chi, as an essential component of traditional Chinese health preservation culture, was explored in depth. This session featured a special segment on Tai Chi theory and live demonstration, providing students with a learning experience that integrates both theory and practice.

Professor Hui-Jun Zhou, the Course Host, led the lecture and introduced the applications of Tai Chi in traditional Chinese medicine, sports science, and modern health management. She emphasized that Tai Chi is not just a martial art but also a practice that promotes mind-body balance and enhances the body’s self-regulation abilities.

 

Additionally, Professor Zhou shared the scientific evidence supporting Tai Chi’s benefits in chronic disease management, mental health, and neurological rehabilitation.

Guest speaker Master Li Shudong, with nearly 30 years of experience in Tai Chi health research and promotion, provided an in-depth explanation of the core theories of Tai Chi. This included the principles of softness, circularity, and fluidity in movement, the circulation of qi and blood, and its application cases in medical research.

Master Shudong Li demonstrated the essence of traditional Chen-style Taiji, with movements that were smooth and continuous, embodying the balance of hardness and softness. His performance fully showcased the profound skill and cultural depth of Taiji.

Student Ethan Zhu Demonstrates Tai Chi

After the theoretical explanation, Ethan Zhu performed a Tai Chi demonstration. Engaging with the students from a peer’s perspective, he showcased the charm of Tai Chi, presenting to Stanford University’s young elites the fusion of Tai Chi’s history and modernity, the coexistence of softness and strength, and the profound yet graceful essence of Tai Chi in youth. This demonstration not only sparked students’ interest in Tai Chi but also helped them gain a deeper understanding of the integration of theory and practice.

This Tai Chi theory and demonstration session not only provided Stanford University students with an experience that integrated academic research and practical application but also contributed to the promotion and development of Tai Chi culture in international higher education institutions.
